Accidental Author
1. What's in your wallet right now?Two Master Card debit cards (personal and joint account), insurance card, some cash, an old Banana Republic and Neiman's Gift card (I have trouble spending money), and receipts ( I'm always returning the things I finally allow myself to buy). 2. What do you wish your parents taught you about money?That you don't make any as an English major. 3. What is your worst habit around finances?I know I could invest more in creative ways. 4. What makes you happy?Groceries. When my daughter and husband are happy. Writing a good scene. Rewriting. Good books. T.V. Complaining. 5. Personal philosophy around money?I'm fond of it. 6. Where does money come from?Work. 7. What would you do with a million dollars?Put it in real estate and my Morgan Stanley accounts. Boring, I know. 8. What is your most prized possession?My unpublished work. 9. Who is your role model?I've never had a role model, which isn't to say I haven't looked up to many, many people. There are too many to list, and in most cases I borrow/admire a trait versus the whole package. 10. What is your greatest achievement?My family. 11. How did you decide to become a writer?I didn't decide. I just took a shot at it. 12. What contributions to society do you want to make?I want to entertain people and say things they've been thinking about. 13. If you could buy one thing right now what would it be?A home. 14. Favorite activity that doesn't cost a dime?Reading books from the library. 15. How do you indulge yourself?Going out to dinner and drinking good wine. Ice cream. Going to the farmer's market. Kaui Hart Hemmings grew up in Hawaii, thinking about how she was going to get beer and go surfing. A graduate of Colorado College and Sarah Lawrence College and a former Wallace Stegner fellow, she now lives in San Francisco with her daughter and her husband.
