The Apprentice

1. What’s in your wallet right now?

I don’t carry a wallet, but my purse contains all the essentials – keys, blackberry, cell phone, credit cards and my day planner.

2. What do you wish your parents taught you about money?

I grew up in a very modest family. Money was not easy to come by. Given this, I feel my parents taught me a great deal about the importance of money and that you have to work hard to earn it.

3. What is your worst habit around finances?

Going on vacations when I should be saving.

4. What makes you happy?

Spending money on things I love to do – ski, scuba dive, etc.

5. Personal philosophy around money?

Cash is King. I learned the phrase from a professor in graduate school. When you start a business the phrase becomes your mantra.

6. Where does money come from?

I wish it grew on trees, but for me it comes from hard work.

7. What would you do with a million dollars?

Use it to grow my magazine, Her Sports.

8. What is your most prized possession?

I’m not a very materialistic person so I don’t think any of my possessions are that important. Even when I was making an executive salary, I drove a used SUV. I just won a new car on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart so I’m sure that's a possession I’ll cherish.

9. Who is your role model?

My father has been a great role model. He’s always worked really hard and has taught me that you need to go after your dreams even if it means taking risks.

10. What is your greatest achievement?

Starting Her Sports magazine when everyone said I was crazy. In 2004 we won the Charlie Award for Best New Magazine and in 2005 we were named one of the 30 Most Notable Launches. My greatest non-business achievement would have to be completing the Hawaii Ironman World Championships.

11. How did Her Sports get started?

I was so disappointed with all the health and fitness magazines on the market. They seemed to be filled with quick fixes and fad diets. I wanted a real sports and fitness magazine that would inspire women to be healthier and more active. I did my research and met with countless people in the magazine industry and finally decided that I was ready to leave my corporate job (I was CMO of a $700 million publicly traded company) and start Her Sports.

12. What contributions to society do you want to make?

I want to play an active role in the fight against childhood obesity.

13. If you could buy one thing right now what would it be?

A new triathlon bike.

14. Favorite activity that doesn’t cost a dime?

Cycling and running or just sitting on our dock with my husband and two dogs.

15. How do you indulge yourself?

On a rare occasion I’ll treat myself to a massage – it feels the best after a really hard workout or a race.

Dawna Stone was chosen as Martha Stewart's Apprentice in a live broadcast six weeks ago, and for good reason. A successful businesswoman in her own right, Dawna is founder and publisher of Her Sports magazine, which merges her two main passions, sports and business, into her dream company. The magazine has since won a 2004 Charlie Award for Best New Magazine, been recognized as one of the 30 Most Notable Launches of 2004 (out of over 1,000 new magazines), and was profiled last summer in Forbes magazine.

A competitive triathlete, Dawna finished the grueling Hawaii Ironman World Championships in 1999. She is also an avid road cyclist, snow and water skier and loves trying new sports like kite-boarding and mountain scootering. Dawna lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., with her husband, Matt, and their two dogs, Buffett and Valkyrie (Val).
